January 28th marked my first solo show, and in the wonderful city of Montreal to top it off! A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Chris Parasuik and Noemie Carigran for the wonderful space, the mouth-watering food, and for being awesome in general while hosting this event - Karma will take care of you , but until then consider me totally indebted to you for pulling this off! We had some fantastic musicians playing live music all night - Thank you Alex - you really created a mellow and interesting space for my pieces to marinate ... thank your talented side kick too, the accordion with the drumming was lovely :) Thank you to my impromptu tech crew who proved to me that anything is possible if you have good friends! You guy almost made me cry about ten times that day - words cannot express my gratitude and my total love for each and every one of you : Derek, Hugo, Megan, Kenny, Jackie, Will, Bret, Sarah ( and Alex!), Emily, Ben and Amanda.... you guys amaze me. A big thank you for everyone who came out for the show, some driving in from out of town just for the show before driving back on snow-covered roads, some from next door, all appreciated <3 Thank you to everyone who supported this starving artist by buying a piece and becoming an official patron of the arts! I hope you love the pieces as much as I loved making them for you! Hugs and kisses to my family, whether they were able to come or if they were stuck at work or out of province - I got here because of your love and I could never create any of this without your support and encouragement and I love you to bits! To all my friends who couldn't make it, you are always in my heart and no matter how far away you may be or how busy our lives become you're always going to be right here with me where it counts <3
* There are a few pieces left from the show if you didn't get a chance to take your favourite home the night of the show or if you weren't able to make it - msg me on facebook if you want to take a look at the available paintings, drawings and tshirts * Some photos of the night by the talented Dave Macartney : http://www.flickr.com/photos/snow_dave/sets/72157629091346223/ Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jennifer-Bisson/339765080313

Here's a taste of the new stuff that will be on display and for sale at the Jan 28th show at 3655 St Laurent, Montreal!! Contact me if you would like me to put one aside for you - otherwise its first come first serve!
* Come early to get first dibs!* ( 7:30 for early birds, 8pm-8:30pm the bouchees are served ) My friend and talented musician and cook Chris Parasiuk ( lead singer of Oliver the Great) will be co-hosting an art show the last weekend of January ( Saturday the 28th) and everyone is invited and encouraged to come!! This will be my first solo exhibit, and will feature some past works as well as a few brand new ones that no one has seen yet! There will be custom hand-stenciled t-shirts for sale, art cards, and original pieces ranging and sizes and prices (starting at $30!) - so come on out , have a bite to eat, pop open some champagne and join me in this visual extravaganza! It's a perfect sized space to fit lots of paintings and lots of fantastic people ! $5 at the door will go towards the cost of food for the generous host Chris who will be whipping together some magic-in-your-mouth bouchées ( which alone will be reason enough for coming up to the loft) , there will be great music playing, and no end of great people to network with ! Creative souls - musicians, ad men and women, fashion designers, writers, actors, hair stylists, graphic designers and people who just love art ( or love me enough to smile and nod at my finger paintings) - this is going to be a hot place to relax, mingle with wonderful people and take home something special and one of a kind made by your friend the artist ;) LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE you!!!!!! Jenn_ Facebook event page : https://www.facebook.com/events/328167773860310/ _December 2nd at the Arts Court in Ottawa I will be included in a group show that will feature some of the up and coming stars of the art community. I am so honored to be included and I can't wait to party with all the amazing talent that will be there! It's going to be a great night!
"I have curated some of the best artists I could find and now, with the help of Ottawa Fringe Fest we are putting one of the coolest art shows for you all. This is a very rare event as you may never see all of these artists in one show at one time again. This is a fundraiser for both the Ottawa Fringe Fest, as well as the Artists involved. There will be 50+ pieces available for purchase, one piece per artist (just in time for Christmas) and the event is licensed and there is a DJ to keep you moving. have put shows together like this in the past, but not at this level, the artists are among the best local talent you can find. If you own an art gallery then this is where you can head hunt for your next star(s) artist in your gallery. If you are with the media, you will want to work out a way to be there because there is nothing worse then finding out after the fact that you could have covered this story. and if you just simply love artwork, then this is the one show between shows that you will want to attend. So mark this one in your calendars and make the time because if you do not go to this, you will be hearing about it for months from now form everyone around you and regret missing something as awesome as this event. thank you Daniel Martelock" For the third year in a row I'll have a piece in the SAW Gallery's SKETCH show for this fantastic annual event! With pieces as low as $10 it's the best place to snatch an original piece of art !! I never miss it!
If you haven't yet, you need to listen to this up-and-coming band called Oliver the Great. Love them. Plus I'm doing their album and merch art. They are incredibly talented musicians with a great sound.
"OLIVER THE GREAT falls somewhere between Radiohead, The Mars Volta and The Dears, which leaves them a lot of space to define themselves in. Trippy rythms, melodic and thoughtful lyrics, and a sprawling electronic but earthy sound." Very honoured to work with them and to have our creations come together. You can buy their music online at : http://oliverthegreat.bandcamp.com/ Maybe its because I grew up in the country, where trees out number buildings a thousand to one. Maybe it's because no matter where I go they're there to remind me to stay grounded. Maybe it's because they've been here so long and have seen it all, and will see more after I'm gone. Maybe it's because they're planted deep into the earth while everything else runs frantically around. But they remind me of God. Or whatever you want to call it. I think Love is a better word. Love with a Big L because its the Big love, the one that makes the energy that makes the matter that makes the everything. Yeah, I'll stick with that for now. The trees remind me of Love. They remind me that nature knows best, that everything will pass, and that the world will keep on turning no matter how crazy life may be today. I like looking up and seeing their arms over my silly little head, spread out like a giants outstretched hand - covering me from a high height and giving me lots of room to grow. Maybe its the colours and the way the leaves are like a lace lampshade for the sky. The change in colours through the seasons, adapting and surviving and thriving. The colours grab me and shake me awake and tell me that the world is full of awe inspiring beauty if I'd just open my eyes to it. The quietness, the still, except for those days when the wind wants to make noise... and the trees let it. They tell me that there will always be those who make you sway, make you ruffle, make you bend, and sometimes you break a little, but afterwards, life goes on, and you just keep growing. Maybe its sentimental, but whenever I get sentimental I feel my spirituality come alive - I'm savoring the moments, the beauty, the pain, the life that's rushing through my veins and making me feel everything. And when I'm feeling everything, I know I'm feeling my spirit, which is everyone's spirit, which is Love.
Very excited for this next chapter in my career and my life - I'll be moving to Montreal to develop my painting and my bilingualism in my favourite city! Can't wait to live in the city that has held and inspired so many of my favourite contemporary artists, to explore and discover galleries in every corner of the city, and to paint and draw and create and explore in this new environment! It's strange to feel so at home in a place you've never lived before - but my parents and grandparents all lived in Montreal - it must be the nostalgia in my DNA <3
To all my friends in Ottawa - THANK YOU for the past few years.. believing in my dream, pushing me to challenge myself, reminding me why I do this, and not letting me give up...for giving me the love and support to keep going.. I owe all of my success and blessings these past 2 years to you! I will be back to visit, and I look forward to visits at the new place <3 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Here is a glimpse at what I've been working on - they're not all 100% finished yet, but you can see I'm exploring and branching out from my last series that was more tumultuous and uncontrolled in their composition.. My work has been hugely affected by interior design and nature lately -I've been really inspired by the combination of domestic and organic environments and motifs, both of which have been traditionally linked to femininity. By juxtaposing the two realms and unifying them with saturated colour ( another traditionally non- civilized/non-masculine signifier of primitivism and femininity - for more on this I recommend Chromophobia by David Batchelor) I'm exploring reassignment of patriarchal values, to empower femininity and feminine history through the combining of 'feminine' signifiers. All these works are boldly imposing both in size and colour, reconfiguring feminine signifiers so that they are no longer passive but strong and unapologetic.
Just like the spring sunshine is melting the snow into streams, my inspiration is flowing and I can barely keep up with my ideas and desires for creating new pieces. I've started to branch off of my usual tumultuous abstracts and I'm moving to a more controlled, layered, linear style - still very natural and organic forms, but more steamlined. I'm loving pairing strong colours and bold sizes with feminine and intricate patterns - I'm Very excited to share them with everyone! I've had so much support the past few months, love has really come out of the woodworks to become very prevalent in my life- I am so grateful for everyone's undying enthusiasm and encouragement during this time of transition and rebirth - it's amazing. The electricity is back in the air, in my body, and in my heart - and as a result- it's coming through on the canvas as well :) Can't wait to post pictures!!
