Regardless of my medium I seek to capture the energies of a person, place or thing through colour, line and texture. I steal silhouettes, movements and hues that trigger my emotional memory associated with my subject, place or moment so that even when they are free of figures and representation they carry their nostalgic essence.
In my representational work I experiment with metaphors and archetypes that resonate familiarity and understanding. Each character embodies a fear, desire, idea or identifier that I am personally exploring, sometimes seriously, sometimes playfully.
I want to create artwork that connects people through shared experiences, to encourage compassion and harmony on any scale.
"Emerging artist Jennifer Bisson, an Ottawa native, studied Studio Art and Art History at the University of Guelph. She is currently living and working out of Montreal.
Bisson discovered her unique style while in university and quickly found that her honest, passionate approach to abstraction lent itself to experimentation with multiple mediums and applications. The first of which, developed during her studies, Bisson’s primary focus was natural abstraction, a territory that expressed a ” …voluptuous, moody.. and honest…” composition. An artist in constant evolution, Bisson began to integrate representation into her abstraction. Combining the two distinct techniques, she strives to connect the crispness of environment and the blurred washes of nostalgia.
Before leaving Ottawa in 2011, the young artist focused on developing the second, and darker, application of her work through portraiture. A deeper reflection on self and ego, projection and internalization, disconnection and unity, beauty and abjection, Bisson explored what it means to be self aware. This series of introspective work allowed the artist to expand her understanding of the human form and the effect of symbols and icons of femininity, domesticity, sexuality and identity stereotype.
Since being in Montreal her work has developed further both in terms of execution and concept, resulting in an emotionally resonating series entitled “Burgess Wood” where she juxtaposes nature-based imagery with nostalgic phrases such as ” Any happy little thought ” and ” Borrowed feathers do not make fine birds” to re-interpret and re-mix memories of growing up in the 80’s and 90’s in rural Ontario. Her nearly sold out show in late January proved that she and Montreal are a good mix." - S. Tupper, blogger, 2012
